Slow Cooked Asian Style Pulled Pork …

Slow Cooked Asian Style Pulled Pork 001

I love my slow cooker because it makes my life so much easier.  Toss together a few ingredients, add some meat and dinner literally takes care of itself … and what’s not to love about that!  You can use pork shoulder for this recipe (or any of your favourite cuts of pork) but usually use Pork Fillet.  It is typically a more expensive cut of pork but I’ve recently started buying it from Aldi.  At $19.99/kg it’s much cheaper than the butcher or supermarket and the quality is just as good!  I prefer using the fillet because it’s boneless and trimmed of literally all excess fat which means I’m not paying for bits that are just going to end up in the bin.  I used 2 pork fillets for this recipe … the first fillet was $10.83 for 542g and the second fillet was $12.35 for 618g.  At just a little over $23 it’s not bad value when you consider I ended up with enough shredded pork for 3 meals for a family of 4 … pork sliders, pork tacos and shredded pork served on a bed of mashed potatoes with vegetables … working out at just a little over $7.00 per meal.  It’s also delicious on sandwiches and wraps.  Enjoy!

Ingredients ...
  • 2 x pork fillets
  • ⅓ cup soy sauce
  • ⅓ cup honey
  • 3 tablespoons Shao Shing Chinese cooking wine
  • 3 tablespoons tomato sauce
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 ½ tablespoons fresh, grated ginger
  • 2 teaspoons Chinese 5 spice powder
Method ...
  1. Combine soy sauce, honey, Chinese cooking wine, tomato sauce, sesame oil, garlic, ginger and Chinese 5 spice powder in the slow cooker bowl and stir to combine.
  2. Cut each pork fillet into two or three pieces and place all pieces into the slow cooker. Coat each piece of meat with the marinade, put on the lid and cook on low for 8 hours.
  3. Remove pork from slow cooker and shred the meat using two forks. Once shredded, spoon some of the marinade over the meat to prevent it from being too dry. Serve on wraps, sliders, tacos, enchiladas or with mashed potatoes and vegetables. This meat is also suitable to freeze.
