Choosing the Right Lunchbox for Mum or Dad to take to Work …

Choosing the Right Lunchbox for Mum or Dad to take to Work 001

Around this time every year, choosing a lunchbox and filling it with nutritious food for kids going back to school becomes a very hot topic. I’ve shared loads of ideas here on the blog and you can read more by clicking on the “Lunchbox Ideas” tab on the top menu above. But, what about Mum and Dad … I’m sure they need some lunchbox inspiration as well!

Like many of you, I’m a working Mum (I work casually) but still try to take lunch with me when I do go to work. I love being able to pack healthy, nutritious food that I enjoy eating but more than anything, it’s a great way to save money. Buying morning tea, lunch and drinks can cost as much as $15 – $20/day, which can really add up. Imagine if you spent $15/day, 5 days a week, 48 weeks of the year (allowing for 4 weeks holidays) … that’s $3600/year … WOW! That figure may shock you but you’d be amazed how easy it is to spend that kind of money without even thinking about it! Now imagine, what you could do with that amount of money … a holiday to Fiji, furniture for the house, extra mortgage or car payments, private school fees for the kids and the list goes on! So taking lunch to work every day is really worth the effort … wouldn’t you agree!

Although I’m good about packing my lunch, it usually ends up in a plastic bag, which I put in the fridge when I get to the staff room. So when a lovely box of goodies arrived from my friends at Décor recently containing an insulated cooler bag, loads of containers in a huge range of sizes, ice bricks and drink bottles, I decided it was time to spoil myself and kept it all just for me … evil I know, but I figure I deserve a treat every now and again!

I’ve been road testing everything for the last 2 weeks but, to be honest, it was never going to be a challenge. I’ve been a fan of Décor products for a very long time and have a cupboard full of it to prove it. And it’s not hard to be won over because their products are:

  • Air-tight and leak-proof
  • Functional and attractive
  • Come in a fabulous range of sizes
  • BPA, PVC, lead and phthalates free for food safety
  • Budget-friendly
  • Microwave Safe
  • Easy to clean
  • Accessible and available at most supermarkets and department stores
  • Cooler bags are insulated

What’s not to love! I think the thing that’s most appealing to me though is that this isn’t simply a random collection of containers … it’s a lunchbox system. The containers have been designed to fit together like a jigsaw inside the cooler bag so that individual food types can be separated for peak freshness and taste.

And just to tempt you, here’s my lunch for today:

  • Tuna sushi (store bought)
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Cheese sticks
  • Carrot sticks
  • Sugar snap peas
  • Hard-boiled egg
  • Hummus
  • Rice Crackers
  • Fruit salad of mango, kiwi fruit, grapes and strawberries

This food was all prepared the night before which saved me so much time in the morning … I just needed to grab the containers from the fridge, add an ice brick and place everything inside the cooler bag … and let’s not forget a nice, cold bottle of water … easy peasy!

So, don’t let the kids have all the fun and all the cool stuff … set yourself up so you can start taking your lunch to work!

So tell me, do you take your lunch to work and, if not, how much do you spend each day?

  1. I use Decor lunch boxes to take my lunch to work too!

  2. I’m pretty lucky in that I work from home so no lunchbox required! When I did work in an office, I usually took leftovers from the night before. I still love my leftovers, but one of the benefits of being at home is that I can whip something up should I feel the urge 🙂

    • I love my leftovers too, Janet. I often plan for leftovers when I cook dinner because it saves me so much time preparing the lunches x

  3. What a good post – and just at the right time too. Why should kids get all the good stuff at back to school time? I agree that making your own lunch is a great idea. Very cost effective and hey, it means you can use leftovers or have your favourite sandwich filling. I cook and freeze a lot of single portion things for my kids’ lunches (pies, pasta and sauce portions, and other things) so it’s just as easy to put one of them in my own lunchbox at the same time.

    • I’d end up spending a fortune if I bought lunch every day … thank goodness for a microwave and fridge in the staff room!

  4. I love lunch boxes. Part of me wishes I had to work so I could have one. Another part of me is really glad I don’t. 🙂
