Bryce Canyon, Utah, USA …

Bryce Canyon 001

We recently went to Las Vegas to attend a friend’s wedding and decided that we’d turn it into a bit of a holiday. After going to the wedding and spending an action packed 6 days in Las Vegas, the pace slowed a little when we hired a car and headed to Utah to visit Bryce Canyon. I’d always been intrigued by this part of the country having heard wonderful stories about the spectacular scenery but nothing really prepared us for just how spectacular it was.

Bryce Canyon is a National Park and has the largest collection of hoodoos in the world. And what’s a hoodoo? It’s an unusual shaped pillar of rock that is left behind after the forces of erosion from wind and water have taken effect.

It is possible to stay overnight in the Canyon in one of the two campgrounds or the Lodge but we chose to stay in the Bryce Canyon township at the Best Western Grand Hotel. Both the township and Canyon were easy to find and, although we had a GPS fitted to the car, we rarely used it. A shuttle service does operate throughout the National Park but we chose to drive and navigated around easily in the car. There is an entry fee of US$30, which you pay at the main gate but it is valid for seven days.

It is possible to hike in the Canyon but we were happy to simply drive and stop at each of the viewing points along the way to take in the spectacular views. There are 13 viewing points, the round trip scenic drive is 38 miles and we spent around 6 hours in the Canyon.

We visited during the second week in October and the weather was mild. We were perfectly comfortable in summer clothes of light pants and a t-shirt. You can do a bit of walking even at some of the viewing points so good, comfortable shoes are a must.

Bryce Canyon is absolutely breathtaking and we were absolutely in awe of its size, colours and beauty. No photos can do this incredible landscape true justice but I’ll try anyway! So tell me, have you heard of Bryce Canyon, have you been or is it on your “Bucket List”?
