Slow Cooked Lamb Biryani …

Slow Cooked Lamb Biryani 001

It’s no secret that I love Indian food and this Slow Cooked Lamb Biryani is a definite favourite … easy to make and absolutely delicious. It’s also very mild and suitable for most kids. The other reason I love cooking this dish is that it’s kind to the budget. I found these 2 mini Lamb Shoulder Roast at Coles for under $12.00 and fed 6 people generously. Enjoy!

Author:
Ingredients ...
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 2 brown onions, sliced
  • 600 – 700 g boneless lamb shoulder
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
  • 1 red chilli, finely sliced
  • 2 teaspoons garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ cup plan greek yoghurt
  • 1 x 400g can diced/crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup beef stock
  • ½ cup slivered almonds
  • ½ cup fresh coriander, chopped
  • 2 cups cooked rice
  • 2 tablespoons hot milk
  • 1 lime, cut in wedges
Method ...
  1. Using ⅓ of the oil, cook the onion until it’s lightly browned and soft. Transfer onions to the slow cooker.
  2. Using another ⅓ of the oil, brown the lamb evenly all over. Make sure the pan is hot enough so the meat doesn’t stew. Transfer the lamb to the slow cooker and place on top of the onions.
  3. Using the remaining ⅓ of the oil, add the garlic, ginger, red chilli, garam masala, turmeric and cumin and gently simmer for 3 – 4 minutes until fragrant. Transfer to the slow cooker.
  4. Add the yoghurt, diced tomatoes and beef stock and stir to combine. Cover and cook on low for approximately 7 hours.
  5. Once cooked, remove the lamb from the slow cooker and shred with two forks. Return the shredded lamb to the slow cooker and set to warm until ready to serve.
  6. Heat a non-stick pan over a medium heat, add the slivered almonds and toast until golden brown. Keep an eye on them so they don’t burn and remove from the pan when done.
  7. Cook rice, add milk and stir through.
  8. Place rice in a bowl, add the lamb biryani, sprinkle generously with toasted slivered almonds, coriander, add a lime wedge and serve. Raita and Naan Bread are great additions to this dish.

  1. Hi, Thanks for this recipe, I can’t wait to try it. Just a question, why am I adding the hot milk to the rice? Thanks in advance, Samantha

    • Do try it, Samantha, it’s a delicious recipe! You can leave the hot milk out if you like but I just find it gives the rice a beautiful, creamy flavour. I usually cook my rice in a Rice Cooker which tends to dry the rice out a little more than if cooked in boiling water on the stove, so the milk also makes the rice a little moister … hope that helps!

  2. I don’t know how I came upon this post as it’s certainly not your most recent however, I’m glad I’ve found it because this week I’m purchasing a slow cooker. Long overdue. This biryani lamb looks like a great recipe and yes, I also buy the shoulders of lamb because they seem to be the best value of all xx

    • I’m betting you’re going to love your slow cooker, Charlie … I use mine all the time and it’s perfect for those days when you know you’ll be home late x
