A Day at Sentosa Island, Singapore … “Signs on the Loose” …

A Day at Sentosa Island 001

Last October, hubby and I travelled to Borneo stopping over in Singapore for 4 days on the way.  We hadn’t visited Sentosa Island in over 20 years so we decided to include a visit on this trip.  Sentosa Island is a really popular island resort located just off the mainland.  It can be accessed by a causeway, however, we decided to catch the Cable Car.  I usually don’t enjoy anything involving heights so I focused on the horizon, repeated many times “Don’t look down, don’t look down, don’t look down” and made it across safely (and back again).

Sentosa Island is home to some fabulous resorts including Hard Rock Hotel, Movenpick Heritage Hotel Sentosa and Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort and Spa among others.  As we were only visiting for the day, we didn’t stay in any of the hotels but we did check out the Hard Rock Hotel which looked incredible.

We chose to have a fairly relaxed day and didn’t bother going to Universal Studios … the kids weren’t travelling with us this time and we had also visited Universal Studios in Japan only a couple of years ago.

There’s plenty of transport to choose from to explore the island:  bus (3 different services identified as the Red, Yellow and Blue Lines), a tram service called the Beach Train and the Sentosa Express monorail which has three stations on the island.  Some people also got around by Segway and, of course, you can walk.

Attractions on the island include Tiger Sky Tower, Butterfly Park and Insect Kingdom, Merlion Statue, Underwater World and Dolphin Lagoon, Fort Siloso and Universal Studios.

Sentosa Island is also home to 3.2 kilometres of white, sandy beaches.  We explored Siloso Beach and enjoyed a casual, yummy lunch at Kurry Korner as we overlooked the cool, inviting water.  If only I’d brought my bathers for the day I would have jumped right in.  It was a scorcher of a day but then every day in Singapore is hot no matter what time of the year you visit.  Anyway, it was at Siloso Beach that we stumbled across an interesting display of quirky, cheeky signs called Signs on the Loose.

A Day at Sentosa Island 006

This is the creation of Samantha Lo a Singaporean graphic artist who attracted attention after she spray painted the words “My Grandfather Road” on several roads and applied stickers to traffic lights around Singapore.  As a consequence, she earned the nickname “Sticker Lady”, was arrested for vandalism and had to perform 240 hours of community service.

These signs were created legally and are meant to be a light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek approach to signage on the island.  I thought they were very clever and funny.

So tell me, what do you think and which sign is your favourite?

Comments

  1. Right now I’d love some hot weather. I love those signs and what a shame the government didn’t see the funny side of it and made her do all those hours of community service – she’d already done a lot for the community! My favourite is the warning about getting out of the sun if you’re that shade of orange xx

Hi Charlie, I loved that sign as well … not sure if you saw the “cheeky” reference down the bottom “this isn’t Jersey Shore”. The other sign I loved was the blue and white one telling people not to wear sunglasses at night time … “don’t act cool”.

  2. haha love the go fly a kite one. What an awesome place! x

That’s one of my favourites too, Sonia … we had a lovely day at Sentosa and Singapore was such a great place to visit!
