Bath Towel Buying Guide and Country Road Towels Product Review 001

Recently I decluttered and organised our main bathroom … wow, what a difference!  I can’t believe how much “stuff” I was able to get rid of!  Bathroom cupboards and drawers can accumulate so many things like out-of-date cosmetics and skincare, old hair straighteners and hair dryers, half empty bottles of moisturisers, broken hair bands and so on.

It was also a great opportunity to look at the condition of our towels, hand towels and face washers and, let me tell you, they were looking a little sad.  Noticing that Myer had a Manchester sale at the time, I took off to the shops in the hope of finding what I wanted and save some money as well.

I looked at all the different brands and towels that Myer had on offer and chose a beautiful set of Heath towels by Country Road in aqua for the main bathroom.  After using the first set for a couple of weeks, I returned and purchased the same towels but in a lovely charcoal (dark grey) colour for the ensuite.  For each bathroom I purchased 4 towels (standard size), 2 hand towels and 2 facewashers.  Bath sheets were also available but I personally find those to be a little too big.

The cost of the towels were:

  • Bath towel (regular size):  $29.95 reduced to $20.95
  • Hand towel:  $19.95 reduced to $13.95
  • Face Washers:  $12.95 reduced to $9.05

Here are some features I considered when choosing towels, hand towels and face washers:

  • Absorbency.  For me, this is the single most important feature of any towel.  Pick up the towel and feel it in the store.  A good quality towel will feel luxuriously soft but also heavier due to the density of the cotton.  Have a close look at the fibres.  If they stand up nice and tall like the grass on your lawn, that’s a sign of its quality.  If, on the other hand, the fibres look flat, that’s an indication that the towel may not be as absorbent.  Not only that but it will probably be rough and feel scratchy on your skin.
  • Value.  I think the old saying “you get what you pay for” certainly applies when buying towels.  I don’t believe in buying the cheapest towel I can find because it’s an item that I have to use every day and it’s important to me that I’m happy with it.  Nothing is worse than a poor quality towel that doesn’t dry you properly, fails to hold it’s shape and, if the quality is poor, it probably won’t last as long any way.  So for me, it’s a balance and I try to buy the best quality towel for the least amount of money.
  • Colour.  Like anything else, the colour you choose will largely be a matter of personal choice.  I tend to buy darker colours as they are less likely to show any marks.  However, when you think about hotels, they always supply white towels because they can be bleached.  It’s up to you.
  • Style.  A plain-coloured towel that co-ordinates with the rest of the bathroom looks fantastic but what I loved about these Country Road towels was the “squared check” look.  It just added an additional style element and texture to the bathroom.
  • Material.  These towels are made from 100% cotton and are made in Australia from Australian Cotton.  I love this because it means I’m supporting Australian farmers and Australian manufacturers.
  • Size.  I chose to purchase the regular size towel but these towels were also available in a bath sheet for people who prefer a bigger towel.  Both the hand towels and face washers were standard sizes.
  • Stitching.  I always have a look at the towel edge to check the quality of the hem and that the stitching is consistent, not loose and even.
  • Price.  Your budget will determine how much you choose to spend on your towels but if you wait for a sale, as I did, you may be able to get a better quality towel for less money.  For the quality, I thought these towels were an excellent buy.
  • Recommendations.  Before I buy most things, I love to talk to family and friends.  No matter what you’re buying, nothing beats a personal recommendation.  I also like to do a bit of research on the internet.

What was the verdict?  I love these towels and if you’re looking for a soft, luxurious towel that gives you that 5 star feel, then these towels are definitely worth a look!  I love the stylish look they add to my bathrooms and I’m confident I’ve purchased quality towels that will look good, retain their absorbency and last for a very long time.

So tell me, what brand of towels do you usually buy and what is the most important feature you look for when buying towels?
